Moose, Design and Purpose Satire

March 8, 2008 / by quarksandgenes

Moose are a deer that was designed by a committee. The design committee was winter weather which gave them thick and layered fur; deep cold ponds with edible root bulbs which gave them swimming abilities and the ability to hold their breath for upwards of five minutes; swampy boggy terrain which gave them big hooves and dew claws; mosquitos and blackflies and giant horseflies which gave them impenetrable fur and powerful immune systems; internal nematode and helminthe and fluke parasites which gave them redundancy in their internal organs; hard woody browse which gave them great molars for chewing and tough stomachs; packs of ravenous wolves which gave them aggression and a nasty kick; calf killing black and grizzly bears which taught them to live on islands during calving and to fight in the water; hunters which gave them big ears and noses and terrific eye sight.

Is there design? You bet. It is nature and natural selection acting on populations of genes and genetic mutations. Is there purpose? You bet. To ensure survival of the species! Then therre are those who think that the purpose of moose is as draft animals.
