Lynx Sightings on Ski Trail

February 10, 2008 / by quarksandgenes

I had a little excitement today when a lynx walked out on my ski trail. We were 18 kms from the base camp when one of these cuties sauntered across my trail. I had seen their tracks before but never the actual cat. Then I noticed that there were two and for added excitement, one chased a snowshoe hare across the ski track. Being mammals, we share 90% of genes in common with them in roughly the same sequence. They are our therefore our not-so-distant cousins. While they may look cute, they are an effective predator and can take down prey as large as a deer under the right circumstances.
