We took a 16 km hike on Sunday into a Canyon where wild horse used to roam. Winter had just recently left the area and wind had blown down fire blackened pine snags everywhere. New greenery was emerging everywhere. Aside from one mule deer, the only other wildlife we saw were two garter snakes live, and one large female that had been trampled by a horse.
It was a place where we had seen a brown bear in past years, mountain goats and coyotes, and rattlesnakes. The forest fire devastated the area five years ago but it is coming in very green and will be great habitat for white tailed deer and California bighorned sheep. Insects consisted solely of woodticks, and we each had our share of those.
It was good to get the body moving again and those seized joints lubed for another season of grunting in the mountains. I thank my lucky stars that I still have legs after all these years of carrying 60 to 80 pound packs and eyes to see the wonders of creation and a nose to smell the musty and aromatic smells of spring and ears to hear the joyful songs of birds.
