Canada has the means to have complete energy self sufficiency with nuclear power. We have more than enough uranium and thorium in Canada's soils to provide us with everything we need and also supply all of North America with abundant clean energy.
I believe that it can be done safely and cleanly and with care and attention to detail and guided by the advice of our best scientists, without much risk. Of all the evils that we can ponder, it is perhaps the least. It can supplement wind, geothermal, solar, hydroelectric and tidal power. If the United States and Mexico fully develop their solar potential in conjunction with this, North America would become almost completely energy self sufficient. The perils we face with coal and gas have brought us to a point where we need to make hard choices.
There is of course the future risk of terrorism as insanity spreads around the globe with the dispersion of religious loonies but we can and must control them and we must not be afraid to make decisions that can save our atmosphere and to save the ecosystems of Planet Earth. After many years of refraining from comments on the nuclear industry and studying the situation, I have reached this opinion. As an environmental biologist, I have serious concerns for pollution that may emanate from this energy source but feel that these can be managed.
